Obama vs. McCain- The Internet Indicators
Google, Web Hit Statistics and Facebook Figures
It is clear that the Internet is a key indicator as to what people are looking into and in election time it is no different. Pew Research reports that some 42% of young Americans use the internet for researching whom they would vote for and that 25% of the rest of the population do the same. I would argue that it is much greater than that even and for sure it is clear that many leaders, movers and shakers in our country use the internet to help gain information on the candidates.
McCain vs. Obama Let's go with the polls, opinions and internet facts and say that it becomes John McCain vs. Barack Obama for the Republicans and Democrats respectively in the final, general election. What would the outcome be? Many polls say that Obama would take it, relatively easily. However what does Facebook, Google and their campaign web page statistics say?
Google Searches (Google Trends) The past, we had this story showing the value of Google in seeing whom is researching whom in the 2008 presidential race. Obama has now taken a commanding advantage. See the chart of Google Trends for all the candidates here:

And here we see just McCain and Obama and covering the last 30 days only: McCain vs. Obama - Google Trends Chart - Click here.
This shows us that although Obama is leading, by what appears a good margin, McCain is "tracking" him nicely and certainly not out of range to make a move. So let's look at some other online indicators.
Web Page Hits and Visitors Let's let the picture below do the talking:

This is quite clear- More are searching for Barack Obama and even *more* are going to his web page and sticking around at that.
Facebook Both candidates have Facebook.com personal pages. This is the site that was first only for college students and invite only, that has now been opened up to all and hosts a lot of middle aged and young aged professionals, as well as students.
Here are the links to their sub-sites: Obama on Facebook.com

McCain on Facebook.com

You will see for yourself. John McCain has about 50,000 supporters signed up on Facebook, while Barack Obama has over 450,000! That is something and quite amazing really. They both also have pages on MySpace, but those are both a bit too cluttered for me to see the trees through the forest.
Outcome? What would the outcome be? Well, of course it is any ones guess at this time. However, looking at these indicators and others, I would have to say it looks very much like Barack Obama would be our next president of the United States of America.
We will look at more indicators over the coming weeks. The Internet is amazing and also useful in this election. Just remember though, nothing is better than challenging your candidates views and looking beyond what the mainstreammedia (MSM) pushes on you- it is your country too!
