The Bank of America logo - More than Meets the Eye

A brief history on the Bank of America logo and the bank itself

There is a recent set of observant eyes which sees the infamous date of 11-11-11 in the Bank of America logo, as we can read on this open forum thread, titled, "bank of america logo!!!anybody see anything wierd...11-11-11 ??" I was like, wow, I see the 11-11-2011 in the logo now too! Yet, what was the real purpose or idea behind the design of the Bank of America logo?

Let's look deeper into the Bank of America logo, which means also looking deeper at the corporation (trading as BAC on Wall Street), which brought forth quite a few surprises for me.

Here is an insight on the Bank of America logo, to start off 'simple' -

"Designed over a very short period (three months) in 1998 by The Brand Union, the Bank of America’s effortless use of text — if not its logo itself — sneaks it into 10th spot. There is alot to be said and perhaps argued about the reliance on an iconic typface to support the logo.

Personally, I find the logo itself indecisive and unsure about its position in relation to the text. It’s the text itself — pure and simple Franklin Gothic Demi Condensed — that inspires a ‘no-frills simplicity’ that I want in a bank. I’m sure designers operated along similar lines. Banks store money, that’s it, and sometimes it takes a logo like this to remind us."

Bank of America's logo re-design, was done so quickly, after THEY, that is right, they got took over, by NationsBank, as we can read:

"The Bank of America Corporation is the largest bank holding company in the United States, by assets, and the second largest bank by market capitalization. The purchase of BankAmerica by the NationsBank Corporation was the largest bank acquisition in history at that time. While the deal was technically a purchase of BankAmerica Corporation by NationsBank, the deal was structured as merger with NationsBank renamed to Bank Of America."

That is correct, Bank of America was taken over by NationsBank in October of 1998.
"BankAmerica was acquired by NationsBank of Charlotte in October 1998 in what was the largest bank acquisition in history at that time. While NationsBank was the nominal survivor, the merged bank took the name Bank of America Corporation, with Bank of America NT&SA changing its name to Bank of America, N.A. as the remaining legal bank entity. The combined bank still operates under Federal Charter 13044, which was granted to Giannini's Bank of Italy on March 1, 1927. However, SEC filings before 1998 are listed under NationsBank, not BankAmerica."

So who is this Giannini's Bank?

"It was established as Bank of Italy in 1904 by Amadeo Peter Giannini and his son in San Francisco, California. Bank of America history shows that at the time of establishment it was for the small farmers who had come from Italy. Today Bank of America provides unparalleled comfort and serves almost 59 million consumers. Bofa has headquarter in Charlotte, North Carolina. It has about 19,000 ATMs and 6,100 Retail Banking Offices"

So, we see, that the modern day 11-11-11 logo of Bank of America, is actually trying to show a series of farm fields, just like their roots started as in the Bank of Italy in 1904... or is there something to this 11-11-11?

The latest Bank of America logo was designed by The Brand Union:

"The Brand Union, a WPP-owned brand agency with 21 offices around the world, created the original identity for Bank of America in 1998. The project is serviced globally, with delivery from both the London and New York office." See:

Bank of America

As the largest bank in the United States, Bank of America provided a full range of financial services. However, Landor’s consumer surveys found that smaller clients viewed the institution as impersonal and oriented primarily toward large corporate accounts. In addition, most people mistook its existing sailing ship logo for the trademark of the Encyclopedia Britannica. In 1969 Walter developed the BA monogram to communicate “something quite wonderful and strange happening between [the two letters]. The majority of the people see a bird. It was conceived as ... a non-threatening symbol more like an old-time monogram. It’s a very personal statement.” The new logo helped Bank of America present a friendlier face to customers.7
